Arts and Literature Alive in Area...
On Saturday October 15, 2005, a perfect fall day, citizens of this area proved they are interested in more than watching the Alabama/Old Miss. game on TV or shopping. At the quaint, but modern, Sardis Library, quite a crowd gathered to meet two authors from this area - Ken Hutcheson of Golden, Colorado, (formerly from Albertville) and Barbara Eubanks, who still lives in this area. Mr. Hutcheson had to brave the snow from a recent snow storm near Denver to meet his commitment here.
Young and old alike sat spellbound as Ken Hutcheson read from his book Saratogan Trees and then asked questions about this most interesting book. The book is set in this area and takes its name from the Saratoga Victory Cotton Mill; Hutcheson spent much of childhood in the cotton mill village there.
Although a work of fiction, the readers readily recognize some memorable characters and events from this area. Many remember Hargus' store behind what is now McCord Ave. Elementary School. Readers see a great similarity between Hargus and a blind man named Sardis in Hutcheson's story. In the book he also tells of witnessing a big shoot-out between the sheriff's posse and a family who refused to be arrested. Sound familiar?
Barbara Eubanks also signed copies of her book Humorous Happenings in Holy Places. She shared some of the stories from this devotional book with the guests as they enjoyed the refreshments provided by Librarian Tami Brooks and her staff.
The day served as a double treat for many. Not only did they get to meet and talk to the authors, they also enjoyed visiting this most interesting library. Sardis City library moved to its present location about two years ago. It is set in what once was an old service station and country store. Tami Brooks, librarian, has made it a true place of interest by keeping many of the items which were found in the old store - racks of sewing notions, crates of apples (now artificial ones), an old Pure Gas and Oil sign, old scales, and many other interesting items. The old counters remain in one of the rooms. Ms. Brooks has done a splendid job acquiring grants to furnish the library and to make it a state-of-the-art establishment.

Saratogan Trees is sold at Albertville Candy Store/Main Street Café and Albertville Library. Humorous Happenings in Holy Places may be purchased also at Albertville Candy Store, Main Street Café, Bible Discount Store in Boaz, Boaz Discount Drugs, Joy Christian Book Store in Gadsden and Hammers in Albertville.

Christian Retail Show in Colorado...
|
| |
What a week of enjoyment and inspiration I’ve had at the 2006 CBA International Christian Retail Show. I, along with 13,000 other authors, buyers, distributors, and media personnel traversed the exhibit floor of the Colorado Convention Center meeting and greeting. Thousands of vendors displayed their books and merchandise. My publisher, Tate Publishing of Mustang, Oklahoma, having two booths - One booth promoted our books, while the newest Tate baby, Tate Out Loud, occupied the other.

I flew into Denver on Sunday afternoon, rode the hotel shuttle down to the convention center and registered. I wandered around and finally found the signs pointing to the huge room where the worship session was in progress. Phillip Yancey, co-author of Fearfully and Wonderfully Made & Where is God When it Hurts, plus many other books, was the keynote speaker. Several musical groups led in some praise music and hymns but to contemporary melodies.

Monday started with a breakfast provided by Tate Publishing for the 50 Tate authors in attendance and for their marketing staff. Ryan Tate, president, and his mother Rita, provided orientation for the week and introduced the Tate staff present. It was so neat getting to know personally these people I have had many so many email and phone communications with. After breakfast, I again rode the wonderful shuttle the hotel provided back to the convention center. Everywhere I turned I met with world-known authors – Jerry B. Jenkins, Tim LaHaye, Rich Brott, Francine Rivers, and the list goes on. Each was signing his/her book and giving them to the attendees. Many took time for me to get a photo made with them. Monday night I signed my book, Humorous Happenings in Holy Places at the personality party. I also had the opportunity to tell the buyers about my new book which is in production, And the Angels Laughed.

Tuesday provided much of the same, except for the fact that I had to make time to finish correcting my final edits before Angels was sent to layout. As any computer user knows, it only takes one wrong click to lose your work. So it was with me on the last section edits. My only option was to do them again and I did. That night, Tate gave a dinner in the 14th floor ballroom of the Red Lion Hotel, where we stayed. From that vantage point, we looked directly across to Invesco Field, which was by the hotel. After a wonderful dinner, Ryan Tate gave an update on Tate’s growth and new ventures. Then he introduced each author. Rita then gave a motivating and inspiring talk. Strangely enough, I met an author, Sondra Gray, who had grown up in Boaz, Alabama, where I live, and in conversation we discovered I had taught her son, Stan Gray, 10th grade English in the ‘80’s at Red Bay, Alabama – just another small world story. (I met Stan at the dinner also.) Then we had some fun games which helped us get to know one another.

Wednesday was filled with appointments with various Tate people. Donna Chumley, the market rep assigned to me, and Rita Tate, head of marketing, shared with me some wonderful marketing tips. I’m so inspired to hit the pavement again. I also met with Leon Mentzer, a highly successful Tate author who shared his marketing tips. In my meeting with Anthony Allen, head of Tate Out Loud, we arranged for me to come to Mustang, Ok, to do the voicing for both my books.
Rita had told the group earlier that networking with other authors and buyers would be our greatest benefit from the week, and so it was. On my last shuttle trip from the convention center to the hotel, I made a God-ordained contact. Only two of us were on that shuttle – a bookstore owner from Illinois and me. In conversation, I discovered she was located not far from where my son and his family live in Columbia, Missouri. She invited me to come do a book signing at her new store. Another God-blessed encounter occurred at the Denver airport on Thursday as I was waiting for my departing flight. I was sitting at the breakfast counter reading my One Year Bible when a nice young man sat down near me. He bowed his head and said a silent blessing. His praying and my Bible reading helped us connect. He is a DJ with a Christian radio station in Dallas and is affiliated with Criswell College there. He asked me if I would do a radio phone interview later. Just guess what my answer was. ‘Ain’t’ God good.
I consider the entire week blessed by God and have faith that the many contacts made will help me serve Him. Strangely enough, one of my Bible reading passages while I was there was I Chronicles 4:10 where Jabez prayed, "Oh, that you would wonderfully bless me and help me in my work; please be with me in all that I do, and keep me from all evil and disaster!" And God granted him his request. I echoed that prayer and said, “Me too, Lord.”

A First Experience...
|
| |
Me, with my North Alabama drawl voice my own books?
They want me to do it?
That's exactly what I did. Recently, at CBA in Denver I discussed this option with Tate Out Loud director Anthony Allen. He began voicing my first one, Humorous Happenings in Holy Places, but ran into difficulty when he reached the text which said, "My husband and I..." He said he then realized the stories were very personal and were in first person, so he thought I should read them. With that, plans were in motion.
My husband Steve and I drove to Mustang, OK, on Aug. 13, 2006, for me to began the voicing at Tate Publishing on Aug. 14. When we arrived at, I've never been made to feel so welcomed and important.
The first indication of this royal welcome met us when we drove into the parking lot. There stood a very professional-looking sign at the parking spot by the front door which said, Reserved for Tate Author Barbara Eubanks. My head began swelling. Then just inside at the receptionist desk was another that said, "Welcome, Tate Author Barbara Eubanks."
No sooner was my voice heard talking to receptionist Melissa Barton than did the execs start coming out of their offices to greet me. Ryan Tate, the president of Tate, his mother Rita, director of marketing, and Richard, owner and founder, all found special ways to say, "Welcome to Tate."
Shortly, Anthony Allen, director of Tate Out Loud, emerged. After being treated by Anthony and his wife Jessika to a wonderful Italian lunch, we returned, and I began my mission. Anthony gave me a few preliminary instructions, and I was introduced to the recording booth, which I soon affectionately referred to as the tomb.
Being somewhat claustrophobic, it took much prayer (it was too late for fasting) for me to enter that small, dark space and close two padded doors behind me. I thought I might have a "running fit" and tear down the booth, but the Lord helped me to focus on the task at hand.
When we left Oklahoma on Thursday, I had completed the reading for two audio books - Humorous Happenings in Holy Places and And the Angels Laughed. I soon will have them in stores and on my website for sale. These will be great gifts for those who, for any reason, find it difficult to read and for people who enjoy listening to audio books as they drive.

ICRS 2007 - A Great Experience !
|
| |
What a great experience for Authors!
The annual ICRS provide a plethora of extraordinary opportunities for both authors and bookstore buyers. I arrived at the Atlanta-Fulton Co. Library Monday, July 9, 2007, for the training seminar provided by my publisher, Tate Publishing. There we authors received information about exciting new developments at Tate where books will be printed on site now and be made available to be sent out the next day. This will keep our distributor, Spring Arbor, with a continual supply and our books will never show "out-of-print" or "not available." Donna Chumley, marketing rep, gave authors new ideas about marketing their book. She also informed the group that Tate will send out personal invitations for any of our book signings to a guest list we will provide. Other Tate staff gave helpful hints about having successful radio and tv appearances. I will be processing the information received there for days to come, but perhaps the best part was meeting other Tate authors and networking with them. We all sense a family atmosphere and are willing to share ideas which have been profitable to us.

From the Library, Steve and I went a couple of blocks from the library to a great downtown diner where local business people go. The food was some of the best we have ever had in Atlanta. The waiting line testified to the food quality.
We proceeded to the Georgia World Congress Center and entered a world of excitment. The many vendors and publishers' booths reminded me just how many books there were on the market. (That made me and my work seem like a tiny minnow in a humongous ocean.) But then I thought, I AM here, so I must be a part of something big.

Monday night we Tate authors enjoyed a great reception sponsored by Tate. We were greeted by Rita Tate, founder and director of marketing. We played a few games for door prizes.(I won the one where we were given two minutes to see how many other words we could form the word "authors")
Tuesday brought other opportunities - a chance to circulate through the displays and booths, meet famous authors (and some not yet famous) and collect many autographed books and cds. At 1:40 I began my signing at the Tate booth. I signed books for many buyers from all over the world. It is exciting to know my books will travel abroad. I met one bookstore owner who asked if I would come to texas for a signing. I never turn down that kind of opportunity. As I made one last pass through the displays before leaving, I encountered a lady at a great booth - Bittersweet Galleries. As Steve and I enjoyed the artist's wife tell the stories behind the many of the paintings, we felt we must take home a piece. That we did in form of a puzzle of one of the paintings. I entered my card in the fishbowl for a later drawing for one of the paintings. After we got home, I received a call from the artist saying I had one the painting - hurrah!
Meeting new people, gaining great information, promoting my books made ICRS 2007 a great and successful event for me, although I returned with sore legs and feet from all the walking involved.

Reflections of...
|
| |
"Humorous Happenings in Holy Places has brought laughter and reflection to my devotional time. Knowing Barbara Eubanks as I do, I'm not surprised that she has a written a devotional book with humor. As a member of her Sunday School class a few years back, she enriched our lives spiritually while incorporating her wonderful sense of humor. This is a great book to give family members and friends who need a smile during their time with the Lord." - Larry Means, Alabama State Senator, 10th District.
"I'm still enjoying your book. It is like a Bible study with laughs thrown in"... Roger O'Shields (Roger is legally blind and is listening to the book by audio)
